Project 100: Photograph Five

I’ve shot this barn several different times in the past but nothing really stood out to me. One day, as I was driving by it, I turned and looked back and saw this angle, which I hadn’t before. It was a good reminder to always move around and explore every possible angle as there might be a better photograph waiting for you.

As for the barn, I imagine what life was like when you didn’t have the other building behind it.

The Pierce County Courthouse in Ellsworth, WI was built in 1905. There’s just something about an old, historic building at sunrise. FWIW, what little processing I did was in the Lightroom 4 Beta (which you can download here.)

Minnesota Photo Project: Week 17

We took the kiddos to Como Zoo a few weeks ago as part of our daughter’s birthday. It was the middle of the day so the lighting wasn’t great but there were a few clouds to diffuse the light so you just had to wait around a bit. I would like to go back and shoot more with some better lighting as this was one of the few I took of the Marjorie McNeely conservatory.

There was a bar in Crown, MN called the County Line Bar & Grill which burned down in 2008 and was never rebuilt. The sign still hangs on.

Minnesota Photo Project: Week 6

A couple of Saturday’s ago, we bundled the kiddos up and headed out to the Winter Carnival in Saint Paul, MN. It was an enjoyable time as a family and as a photographer as Saint Paul and the carnival offered up various interesting items to photograph. This photograph is of the windows from the Landmark Center. I have plenty more to share of this building and I can’t wait to get back down there with several different lenses and a tripod.

Minnesota Photo Project: Week 2

So the muse that is this barn just continues to draw (or taunt) me back again and again. I’m hoping it doesn’t collapse into the pond before I capture the photograph in my mind. For those who want to check it out, go east on County Road 4 off 169 for a couple miles and it will be on the north side of the road.

52 Week Project: Week 51

While driving around Calumet, MI in September, I found this old church that appeared to no longer be in use. It is a beautiful building that was built to withstand the harsh winters of Michigan and last hundreds of years but now sat empty. The light coming through the stained glass window caught my eye (even though I’m not fond of the angle of the shot.)

52 Week Project: Week 50

I had a night out in Lincoln, NE back in October and found a parking garage I could use as a tripod to practice some traffic light trails. I haven’t done a lot of night time photography but will pursue more when it gets a bit warmer out.

52 Week Project: Week 48

This barn constantly catches my attention (or torments me) every time I drive by it. It’s a amazing setting but I’ve yet to grab what my eye sees. This is a HDR composite of five images that I’m still not thrilled about due to not having a dynamic enough sky and it’s a bit “busy” with too much going on. It’s a good reminder not to have too much in a photograph to distract the viewer. Perhaps next time.
